English Intensive Program Project Proposal Targetting AKC Students 2011-2012

Proposal Submitted to: Donors/Supporters
Organization name: Angkor Kids Center (AKC)
Proposal Project: English Intensive Classes
Project Period: 01Nov-30 Nov 11
Project Funding Expected:  US$ 550.00
Project Location: Siem Reap Province

Background
The Angkor Kids Center (AKC) is a private, not-for-profit, non-political, non-religious educational establishments with a mission to aid the rural Siem Reap communities in improving their own standards of living, with a focus on increasing access to qualified education, building life skills and job opportunities for the poor, and unprivileged students, with a sense that Siem Reap has already high potential tourism sector jobs. The center fulfills this mission by encouraging the cooperation with local communities, authorities, nongovernmental organization, private sectors, business, and other environmental stakeholders, to help mainly on eliminating the number of governmental-school-students giving up their study before the medium level (Completion of Grade 9/ secondary school) by empowering their English knowledge capability and capacity as it is strongly required at both schools and careers alike.

AKC was primarily established in 2002 by a young villager, Mr Samnang without any fundamental support in Angkor Thom district 30 km from Siem Reap center. The project could only be implemented by a share in kind of the curious students who attended his English classes. Since Samnang had been granted a great financial support from a German traveling couple, Mr Andreas Dorner and Mrs Jasmin Dorner in 2004. Samnang has achieved his professional career as an English teacher and Travel and Tourism career.

In the mean time, AKC does not have any foundations or stable funding partners yet, the project could only run with our own pocket contributions, and AKC also receives some stuffs and monetary donation from the tourists who spend visit to our community and the shelters.

According to the past experience that the students who have attended the class was selected by the other projects or clubs to lead the group members, furthermore at public school, they have always been given the priority to participate in any social activities in which there were English speaking visitors. For instance, in the first week of June 2011, Mr. Moan and Mr. Pon, AKC students had been selected to join a Japanese club, and they were invited to visit the club in Japan for a week. AKC is very sure itself that its implementation of the English class has a significant productive result, even if it was running with a great lack of financial, material and human sources.

AKC team as the implementers determined that if we have enough sources to implement the upcoming project targeting the AKC students, AKC will make the most sustainable developments and achievements heading the future project expected goals through the set efficient objectives, and a close monitoring and evaluations. This achievement to be made will not only benefit the individual clients but it will become a great model and encouragement for the future students. To give back to community, they will take initiative to help their community and AKC with their experiences.

Goals, Objectives and Expected Results

It is true that the English language courses have been implemented at the governmental schools, the problem is that it is not qualified at all. For whom graduated from high school with English knowledge, they just taking the extra classes from the private schools, not completely gain from the governmental schools.

According to the above diagram, English language is a core objective leading to achieve the other possible objectives. From our vision, we understand that without the English ability, even if you graduated from University, it will be nothing. English has become the most important passport for job opportunity in Siem Reap, Cambodia, due to the fact that Siem Reap is a main tourist destination, where massive job opportunities are waiting for the suitably qualified handlers.

Implementing Tasks:
AKC has already most of the things in place, for instance, two shelters can be accommodate 25 to 30 students in a class, even if it is not comfortable enough for the students, but can be used. Therefore, we just need some refilling stuff and software which is human resources such as teachers’ encouragement (see Budget Inputs section below).

In the meantime, we have already had five classes on processing, coordinated by four volunteer teachers who are and used to be the students at AKC, and we need urgently the support to keep the implementation of the project going on (see the requirement and cost details on Budget input section).

Schedule
The project should be implemented in the academic year 2011-2012. However, the actions already taken; the four classes have been started since this month, Oct 11 under a very difficult situation. Some compulsory stuff (Marker, light tubes..) has been bought with Samnang’s pocket money.

Target Group
80 students of Angkor Kids Center divided in 04 classes, 02 classes at 17h00-18h00, 01 class at 18h00-19h00, and 01 class at 19h00-20h00, who are presently studying at the public school and working in the tourism related field.
