Angkor Kids Center

Welcome to Angkor Kids Center!!!

Thanks for spending your valuable time to visit our site of Angkor Kids Center (AKC), a private, non-profit, non-political, non-religious educational structure established to help educate children in Angkor Thom District, Siem Rep Province, Cambodia.
The center based in Samrong village, forty kilo meters away from the provincial center with a population of approximately 2,500 people. Siem Reap Province is famous for Angkor Wat directly northwest of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

Angkor refers is the group of temples of Angkor archeological site where AKC is situated in a village called Samrong, about 40 km north of Siem Reap town, just twenty minutes from Angkor Wat temple, the main one of Angkor temple site, one of the World Heritage Monument.

Samnang is a young Cambodian boy living in that village who had a dream to build an English class to share this language to his community for free. Primarily, he has achieved one shelter to accommodate four kindergarten classes, and one adult class hosted by the consciousness of local community, taught by volunteers of high and secondary school students with high curiosity of learning new things especially English language.

Samrong is one of the poorest villages in Siem Reap, known as main touristic city and the poorest province in Cambodia. The village has over 500 families living in one community; this means that everyone knows each others. The children in this village could only access to primary schooling level locally whilst international language (English) is not available, if they need to continue their study to the higher levels they have to travel with 15 km for junior high school, and 30 km to the high school where English classes are provided, but it is not qualified at all. With traveling obstacle, more and more children forced to give up their study at primary school, very few could access to secondary schools and fewer could reach the high school; these students are the children of the families with better living condition.

In this part of Cambodia, tourism is the major employer beyond subsistence farms and family retail businesses, so skills in languages provide a passport for future employment. In other words, English is the International language; this means that it is a must to have this skill with everyone at public schools. From the point of view, most of the school in rural areas this language was not provided fairly to the class students. Most teachers use this term as a tool to make more income for their own as their salary from the government is not met their living requirements. The teachers open the private class of schooling schedules at home with hour fees. Students have to pay to get to this class, and these classes are available at a specific time, mostly at night. This is one more issue to lead the students from Samrong could not attend this class even if they have money to pay, but it is not safe to go away at night.

With teachers’ unfair treatment plus traveling obstacles, monetary issue, and family pressure, years by years, children in this village decided and forced to stop studying, and go straight to work for the brick factories and mulberry tree planting farms, more dangerously, they deforest by cutting the wild forest to make wood, charcoal for selling in the only purpose of family survival. Here is a link as an example of how and what is charcoal trafficking in Cambodia.

AKC is the only centre whose goal is trying to stop the kids from giving up their study, on the contrary encouraging them to extend their level of education. AKC offers free English classes to accommodate the kids since they are studying in primary school. Kids from Somrong village and the surroundings now attend the higher class with strong self-confidence after getting the AKC in place.

AKC also builds the key of job opportunities for the local people, as AKC offers one adult class as well with a volunteer professional teacher on Saturday and Sunday, that is Samnang currently working for one of the most famous tour operator in Siem Reap. He loves to share his professionalism among everyone.
